Common Questions about Band Camp for New Parents
Can students go home for lunch?
No, we like all students to remain on campus for lunch and eat there. This helps foster camaraderie among students.
Can I bring my student food for lunch?
Yes, you can. Lunch is typically from 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., but times may vary. It’s often easier for them to bring a sack lunch since we may start lunch a bit early or late.
Are students going to be practicing outside in the heat?
Yes, students will have to practice outside but we aim to limit outdoor activities to the morning (8 a.m. - 11 a.m.) and late afternoon (5 p.m. - 8 p.m.) when temperatures are cooler. We try to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, but this is not always feasible due to facility shortages and other groups using indoor spaces. Because of this, it is essential to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
What if my student has medical conditions and can't participate in certain activities?
Please have them remind Mr. Moreno and the staff about any limitations and ensure that a doctor's note is provided to our school nurse detailing these restrictions. Also please make sure your student is healthy enough to participate fully in marching band. Students who have physical limitations may put themselves and other students at risk for injury.
Can I take my student on a last-minute family trip?
We encourage parents to look at the schedule before planning large family trips. If students miss too much it may result in your student becoming an alternate in the field show. Rehearsal attendance should be a priority for both the student and parent; if it isn't, this may not be the right year for them to participate.
Will I be able to see what my student is working on?
Absolutely! We will host a performance for parents, friends, and family on the last day of band camp. During this performance, we will showcase a portion of the show, pep songs, and warm-ups.
What do I do if I still have paperwork to turn in?
Please fill it out and send it with your student as soon as possible. Try to have it submitted asap.
Why are the rehearsal times different?
Rehearsal times vary due to the need to coordinate with several other groups on campus for facility use. Oak Hills has many groups sharing the same facilities, and we also have to navigate our school schedule and off campus groups that use our campus. Almost every other group has priority over the band so we’re limited to whatever times are leftover to rehearse.
If my child is feeling sick, can they sit out?
Yes, definitely. Students who are injured are sick are encouraged to let Mr. Moreno or an instructor know so they can rest. If a student frequently feels sick and sits out, we may need to discuss whether this activity is suitable for them. When students sit out due to illness, we must consider their safety and their ability to keep pace with other members.
When will my student receive their T-shirts and clothing?
T-shirts and other clothing will arrive over the next two months. Since we work with various vendors, the clothing arrives at different times. The first items we expect are the red logo shirts.
Can my student be in sports and marching band? Students who are involved in marching band must attend numerous rehearsals and performances. We are the busiest group on campus. Unfortunately students who try to partipate in marching band and a sport end up missing practices, games, and competitions which isn’t fair to the other students in the group. If students would like to be in a sport then I recommend they participate in symphonic band or jazz band.
